Clearing the path for a state-of-the-art hospital in Charlestown

Major rehabilitation hospital opens its newest facility in time to care for Boston marathon bombing victims

A major, Boston-based rehabilitation hospital network, which was originally built as a nursing home, had outlived its useful life. The hospital leadership determined that major changes were needed, but renovation of the existing facility alone could not meet the modern-day needs for providing state-of-the-art rehabilitation care. The hospital contacted Barrett & Singal to assist in obtaining state regulatory approvals to build a brand new building at the Charlestown Navy Yard.

From the early concept stage, we guided hospital leadership through the regulatory processes that governed building and opening a new facility. We obtained Determination of Need approval for the substantial capital expenditure associated with the project, provided guidance throughout the DPH architectural plan review process and worked with state regulatory agencies to ensure the new facility had all approvals it needed so that it could open on the date targeted by the hospital.

After approximately six years from the time the client brought the project to Barrett & Singal, the new state-of-the-art rehabilitation hospital opened on time on April 26, 2013—just in time to provide critical care to Boston's marathon bombing victims.
